Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains

Cades Cove is a popular place to visit inside the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This valley covers more than 6,800 acres and was once home to a farming community that thrived in the 1800s. Today visitors can tour historic cabins, churches, and mills that remain standing as reminders of the early settlers who lived there.

1. Beautiful views

Cades Cove is known for wide open fields surrounded by mountain ridges. An 11 mile loop road circles the valley, taking visitors past meadows, streams, and historic buildings. Every turn offers something worth seeing and photographing.

2. Wildlife sightings

Many people visit Cades Cove to see animals. White tailed deer, black bears, coyotes, turkeys, and other species can often be spotted along the loop road. Those who hike the nearby trails may find even more chances to watch wildlife.

The valley has a strong past that can still be explored today. Some of the most visited landmarks include the John Oliver Cabin, the Methodist Church, and the Cable Mill. Walking through these buildings gives visitors a look at how families once lived and worked in the mountains.

In the fall, the valley becomes one of the best places in the Smokies to see colorful leaves. Shades of red, orange, and yellow cover the ridges and draw visitors from late September through October.
